“Love” Pencil Case {tutorial}

Last week I shared this tutorial on Sew Sweet, but for those of you who missed it and still need to make a pencil case before school starts back here it is!

The pencil case is made from fabric, with felt appliqué “Love” sewn onto the front.

Felt in some fun colours
8″ Zip
Flower Buttons (optional)
Basic Sewing Supplies
Download the template here

Step 1
From your fabric you need to cut 4 pieces that are 14cm by 22cm. You want 2 in your outer fabric, and 2 in your lining fabric.

Step 2
Print off the template (linked above) and use it to cut out your “Love” from felt. Because some of the pieces are small or tricky I use tape to stick them down and cut around them, makes it so much easier!

Step 3
Take one of your outer pieces of fabric and pin the “Love” in the center with a slight slant to it.

Stitch around the edge of each letter and the pink background to secure it all to the fabric.

Add some bright flower buttons if you want to (and ignore the sewn in zip, we will do that next!)

Step 4
Take your front piece of fabric (in my case blue check) and with right side facing upwards lay the zip facing downwards on it. Then add the lining fabric with that facing down (so the two fabrics have right side facing).

Sew along the top edge, leaving enough space between the zip and seam. Repeat the process for the other side of the zip.

Step 5
Fold open the fabric pieces, so the two lining fabric are facing each other, and the two outer pieces are facing each other. (Make sure to leave the zip half open)

Pin in place and sew all the way around the edge, leaving just a small gap at the bottom of the lining fabric.

Through the gap we left turn the pencil case right way out. Sew along the bottom of the lining to close the hole that we used for turning.

And you are done! Already for going back to school.

Sunshine Hair Clip Holder {Tutorial}

Today I have a summer inspired craft to share, a tutorial to make a “Sunshine” hair clip holder.

felt hair clip holder

It is very simple to make, just needs felt and ribbon and was all hand stitched. Below is the tutorial to make your own.

Step 1
Print off the pattern pdf and use it to cut out your felt pieces.

Step 2
Take one light blue felt circle and hand stitch the gold/orange bit of the sun to it. Then stitch the yellow center of the sun on top.

Step 3
Place your second light blue felt circle behind the sun one. Fold the shorter ribbon piece into a loop and position it at the top, and tuck the single end of the longer ribbon piece in at the bottom, pin in place and hand stitch around the outside of the circle.

Step 4
Take the two cloud pieces and pin them together, then at the top of the cloud add the other end of the long piece of ribbon between the felt pieces and pin in place. Hand stitch around the outside of the cloud, so the ribbon is secure between the pieces.

And your hair clip holder is finished! Now you need to make some felt hair clips to store on it!

The ones in the picture were made from covering some metal hair clips in green wool, and adding a felt flower, I am sharing the tutorial to make these on Sew Sweet this Monday, so be sure to check out if you want to make some too.

Brownie Cupcakes

Cupcake Brownies {recipe}

One of my very best recipes is my brownie recipe. It comes out perfect every single time and is always a favourite when I bring it to events or groups.

But often to bring a whole big cake is so much trouble, need a big container and knife (and you can’t sneak a bite before taking it!) so I cut down my old recipe I posted here to make cupcake brownies!

Brownie Cupcakes

– 225g caster sugar
– 115g butter
– 1 tsp vanilla extract
– 2 medium/large eggs
– 40g cocoa powder
– 60g plain flour
– 1/2 tsp baking powder
– 1/2 tsp salt

1. Preheat the oven to 180 *C (or 350 *F) and prepare some silicone muffin forms by rubbing butter in them (I find flat muffin shapes work better than those crinkly ones.)

2. Melt your butter in a large bowl in the microwave, be careful to not burn it.

3. Once the butter is fully melted add in the caster sugar and vanilla extract and blend together with a wooden spoon.

4. Add the eggs and mix well with a large spoon. I don’t like to use a electric mixer as it adds too much air to the mixture (and it isn’t hard to just mix by hand)

5. In a separate bowl, mix together the cocoa powder, flour, baking powder and salt. Make sure their are no lumps.

6. Slowly add the cocoa mixture to the butter mixture, 1/3 at a time. Again mix it in with a large spoon rather than an electric mixer.

7. Pour the mixture into the muffin tray, fill each hole about 2/3 full, the mixture will rise in the oven. Place in the oven for about 25minutes. To check the cake is cooked prick the middle with a fork or toothpick, if it comes out clean it is ready!
Let the cupcakes cool  before flexing them out of the silicone tray. If you find your brownies are sticking in the tray, use more butter to grease them next time.

owl hanger felt

Owlie Ornament

A few weeks ago I was requested to make something special for a new little life that arrived into the world. They wanted it to be something special and have an owl on it as it was a special animal for the parents, we discussed maybe an outfit, but babies can grow out of those so fast!

In the end I made this soft tan owl to hang on the wall, with the name of the new arrival hanging between its wings. It is actually rather big, with a wing span of 35cm, and all made from lovely wool blend felt.

This has been the first time I made something like this and I loved it! I maybe over the summer work on making this into a pattern or tutorial to share with you all 🙂

Bow-licious Garland Tutorial

Can’t believe it is nearly the end of June now! Summer holidays are so close and I am ready for summer fun, family parties and celebrations!

Today I am sharing a lovely tutorial to make a pretty “Bow-licious Garland” from felt, and through out the month of July I will be sharing extra felt tutorials to continue the party mood!

So lets get started!!

You will need:

  • Felt in your party theme colours, I went with vintage colours, you could do red, white and blue, or different shades of pink, or a bright mix.
  • 2m of Ribbon, 9 bows makes about 150cm of bunting and you want to add a bit to the end to tie it up.
  • Cotton thread, Glue Gun & Scissors

You first want to pick out your felt colours, and decide the order you want it to go in. Keep in mind we will have 9 bows. I wanted pink, white, blue, white, pink, white, blue, white, pink as my colours for this garland.

So I cut out:

  • 4 x White rectangle, 12cm by 6cm
  • 4 x White rectangle, 6cm by 1.5cm
  • 3 x Pink rectangle, 12cm by 6cm
  • 3 x Pink rectangle, 6cm by 1.5cm
  • 2 x Blue rectangle, 12cm by 6cm
  • 2 x Blue rectangle, 6cm by 1.5cm

You can mix and match the colours, but for each bow you need one piece of 12cm by 6cm and another of 6cm by 1.5cm.

Take your ribbon and find the center point and mark it with a pen. Then make another mark 16cm along, and another till you have 4 marks either side of the middle mark (9 total).

Take one of your large felt rectangles, and place it under so the middle of the felt is under the mark on the ribbon. Using a bit of thread make a knot around the middle and pull tight so it pulls the felt into a bow shape. (If your ribbon moves, you can pull it through the thread to get the mark back in the center).
Repeat this along the length of your ribbon at each mark, so you have 9 bows on it.

On the back of the bow (side with the ribbon) add a dot of hot glue, and stick your smaller piece of felt down. Wrap the felt around the front of the bow, add another dot of hot glue where you started to stick down the felt. Trim off the excess felt so you don’t see anything from the front.
Repeat this for the rest of your bows.

And you are finished!

I hope you make lots of lovely garlands! And don’t forget to stop back next week for some more felt party decorations!!
