Fruit salad bag tutorial

Following on from yesterdays tutorial here are the directions to make a cute little bag to keep all the fruit pieces in when it is not play time!

You will need:

  • Light coloured fabric, cut to 35cm x 14.5cm (or 14″ x 6″)
  • Scrap red felt
  • Scrap green felt
  • 7cm long piece of brown ribbon
  • 2 pieces of white ribbon 40cm long each
  • Sewing needle & thread (a sewing machine makes this bag much easier)
  • Scissors
  • This apple shape pattern

Step 1.

Print off the apple pattern above and cut out the apple shape from your red felt, and cut out a small leaf shape from the green felt.
Step 2.
Fold your piece of fabric in half length ways. Pin your apple onto the fabric, 8cm down from the raw edge.
Fold your brown ribbon in half and pin it between the red apple and fabric.
Sew around the apple securing it to the fabric. Then sew the leaf onto the fabric.
Step 3.
Fold the fabric the other way now, so the apple is on the inside.
Along the two sides make two marks. The first mark should be 2.25cm from the top raw edge. The second mark should be 3.25cm from the top raw edge.
Sew along the edges, leaving a gap between the two points you marked on the fabric.
Step 4.
Now we are going to make the casing for the ribbon. Fold the top edge of the fabric down 2cm. Then took the bottom edge under again so you have a nice clean edge. Pin in place and sew as close as you can along the folded lower edge (where my pins are).
Step 5.
Turn the bag right way out. Attach the end of the ribbon to a safteypin and thread it through the hole in the side seam (made in step 3) and through the ribbon casing all the way back to where it went in.
Knot the two ends of ribbon together and repeat for the other side seam.
Your bag is all ready to fill with the felt fruit pieces from yesterdays tutorial.
And again don’t forget to check back next weekend for my tutorial for little felt cakes.
